About Worktop Oil

A high coverage Worktop Oil that will cover up to 20m2 per litre. Simply wipe into the wood, and the oil will instantly soak in and begin to enhance and protect the worktop.

Our Worktop Oil will enhance the natural beauty of the wood, soaking in to replace any lost oils and to nourish the wood. It highlights the natural characteristics of the wood’s grain, making your kitchen worktops look their best.

As well as enhancing the wood, the Worktop Oil also provides superior protection by creating a water and stain resistant finish. This finish is particularly important around sinks where the wood will often get wet. It will repel common household stains such as juice, tea, coffee, and wine making it easy to clean and maintain your kitchen worktops.

The first coat of oil soaks in and enhances the wood, and the second coat will create a durable, hard wearing and stain repellent finish that will never crack, peel, blister, or flake. Our Worktop Oil is clear and produces a satin finish so will not drastically alter the look or colour of the wood; you should first use a Wood Stain if you want to change the colour of the worktop.

It is a food safe oil that is compliant with the Materials and Articles in Contact with Food Regulations.

Worktop Oil Coverage and Shelf Life

Coverage: 20m2 per litre

Store between 10°C and 25°C.

Once opened, use within 3 years.

Worktop Oil Instructions

The Worktop Oil can be used to treat brand new worktops for the first time, and it can also be used to restore or re-oil older worktops.

In all instances, shake the Worktop Oil well, before use, and ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying it.

Applying Worktop Oil to new worktops

It is important to protect new worktops immediately as they’ll often come without any prior coats of oil. This means the worktops will be susceptible to staining and marking quite easily.

Apply the Worktop Oil using a Foam Brush and wipe in the direction of the grain. Leave the oil to soak in for a few minutes then wipe off any excess oil using a Lint Free Cloth.

Leave the oil to dry for between 4-6 hours then apply a second coat. For a perfectly smooth finish, you should use a Finishing Pad between coats of oil. When the Worktop Oil has dried, simply rub the Finishing Pad over the wood gently to sand out any dust that may have settled on the oil.

For maximum protection apply a third coat of oil in the same way as the previous coats.

Reapply the Worktop Oil once a year, or as necessary for high-use areas. When the worktop has been properly oiled and protected a drop of water will bead up on the surface; as the worktop is used, this effect will diminish and the water will begin to lie flat on the wood. When you see this happen, that is a good indication to reapply the oil.

Restoring an old worktop

The key here is preparation. Once you have properly prepared the wood, you should then follow the instructions above for ‘Applying Worktop Oil to new worktops’.

The first thing you need to do is remove any old coats of wax, oil, polish or whatever may have been applied to the wood over its lifetime. To do this, wipe the wood down with thinners or mineral spirit to remove the old finishes then sand smooth with a #100 Fine Sanding Pad.

If the wood has thick coatings, you may need to sand first with a coarser grade of sandpaper (240 grit) or one of our #60 Coarse Sanding Pads.

At this stage, clean the wood thoroughly using our Wood Cleaner then proceed to apply the oil.

Reapplying Worktop Oil for maintenance

Give the wood a gentle sand using a #100 Fine Sanding Pad then clean using Wood Cleaner. Then follow the instructions above for ‘Applying Worktop Oil to new worktops’; however, you will only need to apply one (maybe two) coats of oil.

Caution: Cloths used for oiling may spontaneously combust. Dispose of cloth safely after use by washing it in warm soapy water before disposal.

Worktop Oil FAQ

Q. What is the difference between Worktop Oil and Danish Oil?

A. Before we sold a Worktop Oil, we used to recommend Danish Oil for kitchen worktops, so it is a completely safe and good oil for worktops. However, when we launched our Worktop Oil, we took our Danish Oil formulation and improved it by adding additional products that help it repel water more effectively; this makes it a better product for worktops which frequently get wet.

Q. How often should I oil my worktop?

A. We recommend oiling a worktop once a year. However, some areas will be more heavily used than others, and may require oiling more frequently. The oil causes water to bead on the wood like a globule; when water stops beading and begins to lie flat, it is a good indication to re-oil your worktop.

Q. Will the Worktop Oil change the colour of my worktop?

A. No. It is a clear oil designed to enhance wood. It will slightly darken the wood, and in doing so it brings out the natural characteristics of the wood, which we think is a great benefit.
