Wood Oil Care Kit

Wood Oil Kit Instructions 

This kit is designed to give any wooden surface an oiled finish, even if your wood is not currently oiled, but you will need to make sure the old finish has been removed before applying the new oil finish with the kit.

If the wood is new, or in good condition, the surface can simply be cleaned and the oil applied. However, if the wood is old and worn you can use the below instructions to return it to new condition.

Step 1 – Clean and Prepare 

Preparation varies depending on the current finish of the wood. 

Oiled or Waxed Wood 

Sand the surface with the 120 grit Sandpaper to remove any old oil or wax coating. When it’s been removed, sand again using the 240 grit Sandpaper. 

Apply Wood Cleaner directly to a clean cloth and rub into the wood with pressure. Wipe off any cleaner with a dry cloth then leave to dry. 

Bare Wood 

For smooth, planed wood, lightly sand with the 240 grit Sandpaper then clean with Wood Cleaner. 

Apply Wood Cleaner directly to a clean cloth and rub into the wood with pressure. Wipe off any cleaner with a dry cloth then leave to dry. 

For rougher wood, sand thoroughly with 120 grit Sandpaper, and then again with 240 grit Sandpaper to create a smooth finish. Wipe down with a damp cloth to remove dust. 

Varnished, Painted, or Lacquered Wood 

Remove the finish entirely with sanding or paint stripper, especially for thick paint or varnish. 

Once stripped, sand thoroughly with 120 grit Sandpaper, then again with 240 grit Sandpaper to create a smooth finish, then clean with Wood Cleaner. 

Apply Wood Cleaner directly to a clean cloth and rub into the wood with pressure. Wipe off any cleaner with a dry cloth then leave to dry. 

Step 2 – Restore and Protect 

Shake the Danish Oil before use. Test on a small unseen area if you’re unsure of the finish.  

Apply liberally with a Foam Brush, following the grain, and leave a thin, even coat. 

Let it sit for three minutes, then wipe away excess with the Lint Free Cloth. 

Allow 4-6 hours to dry, then lightly sand with the Finishing Pad for smoothness. Always sand with the grain and remove any dust with a damp cloth before applying the next coat. 

Apply two more coats in the same way, sanding between each coat. Leave to dry overnight before using.  

Once the last coat of Danish Oil has dried, go over the wood one last time with a Finishing Pad for a lovely smooth surface.  

Looking After Your Wood 

After three coats of Danish Oil, your wood will have a satin sheen, and water will bead on the surface, which are both signs of proper protection. Reapply Danish Oil once a year, or sooner if the finish dulls or water stops beading. 

To reoil, lightly sand the surface with the Finishing Pad. Apply 1-2 coats of oil following the original Restore and Protect instructions in Step 2. 

When the wood looks dirty or smeared, clean with Wood Cleaner. Avoid silicone-based spray polishes, as they can leave a film that causes streaking over time.
