About Fabricoat Textile & Fabric Paint
Fabricoat is specialist fabric paint used to change or restore the colour of any item of fabric. This all-in-one fabric paint is extremely easy to use; just apply to the fabric with a brush or sponge and it will instantly soak in and dye the fabric.
Available in range of different fabric paint colours, it can be used on sofas, upholstery, car seats, footwear, clothing, handbags and all other items made from fabric. The colours are strong and vibrant and will not fade or rub off after they have dried.
Once applied, the fabric paint remains soft and flexible providing a lovely, long-lasting finish that can be enjoyed for years. It soaks into all absorbent materials and once dry it will not make the material go hard or stiff.
The fabric paints can be mixed to match any colour of fabric and either used to restore fabric or paint custom designs onto the fabric. If you’re using the fabric paint to change the colour of fabric, make sure the fabric is currently a lighter colour than the paint you decide to use.

Painting fabrics without a texture change
Fabricoat fabric paint is designed to soak into fabrics and change the colour with little, or no texture change. However, in order to achieve this, the product must be used correctly. If you brush the product on and leave it to dry it can stick fibres together causing them to feel stiff. To avoid this, after applying each coat of Fabricoat, brush the fabric thoroughly using the Cleaning Brush. For heavy piled fabrics we also recommend brushing several times throughout the drying period. This will ‘unstick’ any fibres that have grouped together.
It is inevitable that you won’t be able to unstick every fibre so immediately after application the fabric may feel slightly stiffer. To correct this, simply brush the fabric again using the Cleaning Brush. Day-to-day use of the fabric will also remove any stiffness.
Fabricoat Fabric Paint is Suitable For
Use Fabricoat Fabric Paint to restore or change the colour of any item of fabric, textile or canvas. This includes items such as a bed or headboard, couch, lampshades, tote bags plus any other fabric based items. It can be applied with a Paint Brush or sponge.
It works well on all types of fabric, both natural and synthetic.
Fabricoat is intended for indoor use only. Fabricoat is not designed for outdoor furniture or fabrics exposed to prolonged sunlight or rain.
Fabricoat Fabric Paint Coverage and Shelf Life
250ml - will cover a lampshade or a cushion
500ml - will cover a dining chair or car seat.
1 litre - will cover an armchair.
2.5 litres - will cover a three-seater sofa.
If your fabric has a pile, such as velvet, faux-suede, chenille, draylon or microfibre you will need to use more product. This is because there is a lot more surface area to cover on these types of fabric. We recommend ordering double the above quantities of fabric paint for these fabric types. We would also recommend that you brush the fabric at regular intervals during the drying period to ensure that the fabric does not go stiff.
Store in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight.
Store between 8°C and 30°C.
Once opened, use within 1 year.
Please note that when ordering 1 litre, you will receive 2x 500ml bottles.
Fabric Paint Instructions
Fabricoat Fabric Paint can be applied to all types of fabric by either brushing, sponging or spraying it onto the fabric. We recommend using a Paint Brush, as this is the easiest method and produces great results. Using it as a fabric spray paint is also possible if you want to create a unique design, spray a stencil or achieve a pattern not possible by using a paint brush.
Whichever method you choose to paint fabric, you first need to make sure it is clean.
Cleaning the fabric
Before stating to paint your fabric, make sure the material is cleaned and free of dust.
For best results, the fabric must be the same colour or lighter than the colour you are applying. The material must also be absorbent, so please test the fabric for water absorbency first. If it is absorbent, then Fabricoat fabric paint will work.
If you need a fabric cleaner, we recommend using our Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner. For clothing, just put it in the washing machine as normal but do not use fabric conditioner.
Testing the fabric
Before starting your project, it’s important to test Fabricoat on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric. This will help you check the fabric’s absorbency, texture and adhesion.
- Apply Fabricoat following the product instructions.
- Allow to dry, then leave the area to cure for seven days.
- If the instructions require brushing the pile, do this while the paint is drying.
- Once cured, use a clean dry cloth to gently wipe the surface:
- A very small amount of colour transfer is normal.
- If the paint wipes off easily, the fabric might not be the perfect match for this product.
If you’re happy with the coverage, texture and adhesion after the test, you can proceed with your project.
Applying Fabricoat
Dampen the fabric first with water. We recommend spraying water on with a trigger spray bottle, but if you don’t have one you also can wipe it on with a sponge or cloth.
Shake the bottle, then pour the paint into a bowl and dip in a Paint Brush or sponge.
Rub this into the fabric and it will instantly soak in and change the colour.
To ensure an even coverage on textured fabrics, brush with a soft bristled brush in all directions while paint is drying. This process will also remove any excess fabric paint that didn’t soak in properly.
If needed, apply additional coats once the previous coat is touch dry. To keep the fabric soft, brush again once dry. Only dampen the fabric for the initial coat.
Allow to dry between coats, then leave to cure for 7 days. Our advanced water-based formula bonds beautifully with the fabric, delivering a soft, flexible, and durable finish that stays looking fresh and feeling natural for years to come.
Using Fabricoat as a spray paint
Spray painting fabric is easy and can be used on upholstery, soft furnishings, car interiors, clothing, footwear and all other fabric materials.
Thin Fabricoat with water to a ratio of 2:1 (two parts paint to one part water), for example 100 ml of paint mixed with 50 ml of water. This will aid penetration into stubborn fibres. Pour the solution into the airbrush and apply evenly across the fabric.
First spray from side to side, and then up and down, to get complete and even coverage. Or spray it on in any other way if you’re using it to create a pattern or specific look.
Allow the fabric paint to dry naturally or speed up the process with a hair dryer. Make sure each layer is completely dry before applying the next one; this will help achieve a smooth, even finish and prevent smudging.

Fabric Paint - FAQ
Q. Can I use your fabric paint to paint any fabric item?
A. Yes, Fabricoat is incredibly versatile and can be used on any fabric item including chairs, sofas, upholstery, clothes, curtains, car interiors, carpets and many more! Make sure that the material is absorbent, so please test the fabric for water absorbency first. If it is absorbent, then Fabricoat will work.
Q. Will painting my fabric change the feel?
A. No, Fabricoat is designed to dry with a soft, flexible finish, allowing you to recolour, or change the colour of your fabric items without changing how they feel. However, if you apply too much fabric paint, or if the material you are applying it to feels very soft/silky/velvety prior to application, then it may slightly stiffen the fabric. This can be reduced by brushing the fabric afterwards with our Cleaning Brush.
Q. Why is patch testing so important?
A. It's a quick, simple way to get the best results before you embark on your transformation.
A patch test ensures:
- Even coverage on your specific fabric
- Accurate colour representation
- A smooth application process without any hidden surprises
Q. How do I perform a patch test?
A. Please ensure that the fabric is vacuumed and cleaned as per the instructions.
- Apply Fabric Paint on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric, following the product instructions.
Q. Will Fabricoat work on all types of fabric?
A. Fabricoat is highly versatile and works on most types of fabric but some fabrics with unusual finishes (e.g. those with coatings or very loose weaves) may require additional coats for optimal coverage. A patch test will help determine compatibility.
Q. What should I do if the patch test doesn't look as expected?
A. If the patch test result is not what you expected:
- Try adjusting your application technique (e.g apply a second coat or use a different tool, such as a sponge or brush).
- For very absorbent fabrics, you might need additional coats.
- Feel free to contact our customer support team for more information.
Q. Does Fabricoat work on dark-coloured fabrics?
A. Yes, Fabricoat works on dark fabrics, but coverage may require multiple coats for lighter colours. We always recommend a light-to-dark transformation for optimal results.
Testing a small patch will help you see how the colour appears and decide how many coats are needed.
Q. Will Fabricoat wash off after application?
A. Once Fabricoat has dried and cured properly, it is water-resistant and long-lasting. However, the durability may vary slightly depending on the fabric type. A patch test will let you confirm this.
Q. Will the fabric paint colour come off in the wash?
A. No. The Fabricoat takes 24 hours to become touch-dry and can be used after that, but we recommend waiting a full seven days before washing the fabric to allow the colour to fully cure. Once it's fully cured, the material can be washed and cleaned as normal.
Q. Can it be used as a fabric spray paint?
A. Yes, spraying the paint onto fabrics is a great way to create specific design effects.
Q. Is it a fabric paint for clothes?
A. Yes, it can be used to paint clothes and all other items of fabric such as sofas, shoes and soft furnishings.
Q. Do you have a black fabric paint?
A. Yes, there is a black fabric paint in our range of colours. This is highly concentrated so is great for both restoring or changing the colour of fabric to black.
Q. Can you use acrylic paint on fabric?
A. Our Fabric Paint is not an acrylic paint, it is made from polyurethanes and so is a lot more flexible. We wouldn't recommend using an acrylic paint on fabric.
Q. If I fabric paint a couch, how long until I can use it?
A. Fabricoat will be touch dry within 24 hours, but for best results we suggest waiting for seven days for the fabric paint to fully cure.
Q. Will fabric paint work as a lampshade paint?
A. Yes, many of our customers regularly use Fabricoat to change the colour of their lampshades. This video shows how easy and effective it can be.
