How to avoid & Repair Cat Scratches on Your Leather Sofa

Cat on brown leather sofa

Cat scratches to your new leather sofa or couch? It was inevitable!

Cats will often scratch items to sharpen their claws or as a way of marking their territory.

Here are our tips on how to avoid scratching and how to repair scratches on your leather sofa, if it ever does occur.

Provide a scratching post

If your cat has got into the habit of sharpening their claws on your leather sofa, provide it with a more appealing alternative like a scratching post.

Place the scratching post near to the damaged area and gently wipe your cat’s paws down the post to leave its scent on it, encouraging it to scratch here instead of your sofa.

Redirect your cat's attention

Sometimes you will just need to physically stop the cat from scratching.

Remove them from where they are scratching and give them something else to do.

Try giving them a toy to play with or petting them for awhile, whatever they enjoy more than scratching.

Cover your furniture

Until your cat learns to use the scratching post, consider covering your leather furniture with throws or furniture covers.

Clean your furniture

If scratching is used as a form of marking behaviour, as well as the visual marks, they will often leave a scent on the area as a territorial message to other cats.

Prevent your cat from going back to the same area by cleaning your furniture regularly with warm water or specialist cleaners to remove as much of the scent as possible.

We recommend you use our Leather Ultra Clean.
